Carrie Ferguson Weir took time to answer a few of our questions. She shares with us her background and thoughts on blogging and social media. Welcome, Carrie…

Can you give us a little bit of background on Carrie F. Weir?
Carrie Ferguson Weir may have a completely Anglo name, but do not be fooled. The pica pica of her Cuban ancestors powers her Spanglish spirit. Carrie __ or “Caridad!” when her mother is ticked __ grew up in Miami in a big tribe of abuelos, tios y primos. She is a journalist by education and profession, but left late night deadlines in 2005 to launch Los Pollitos Dicen (The Little Chicks Say), a boutique line of Spanish baby and toddler t-shirts. Creating the business also led to Carrie’s personal site, Bilingual in the Boonies; a second t-shirt line, Chichi & Flaco; gigs doing copy writing and public relations for small businesses; the co-creation of Tiki Tiki Blog, and until recently, writing a weekly column for Parenting.com. Carrie lives in a little town outside of Nashville with her husband and daughter and honors her Cuban heritage by regularly dousing the house with Pin-aroma cleanser and her nena with Agustin Reyes colonia de violetas.

When did you start blogging?
I posted my first blog entry in March 2006, wrote a few entries, freaked out, and ignored it until September 2006. It was hard to overcome the “I’m a journalist not a blogger!” But, I have stayed with it because I enjoy the communication, the self-expression, the instant gratification and because it specifically helps one of my businesses, Los Pollitos Dicen. (Aren’t we all pitching something online?)

What do you blog about? Why?
On Bilingual in the Boonies, I blog about raising a bilingual and bilcultural child in Tennessee, far from the Cuban-American Homeland: Miami. I also write about my business, my cubanos and my cozy country life. On my other blog, Tiki Tiki Blog, we take a broader look at Latino living in the United States.

Does your blog reflect your culture?

The Boonie Blog and Tiki Tiki definitely reflect my culture — An americana of Latino descent. It is siempre presente.

What blogging platform do you use?

Blogger for the Boonie Blog, but will be moving to WordPress, which is what Tiki Tiki is powered by.
